- Announcements :
District 322-D, as it stands today, came to existence following bifurcation of district 322-B, in the year 1979-80. Earlier district was very large in area and the development of Lionism in such a big area was at a very slow pace. Administration became a chronic problem, which necessitated thinking towards bifurcation. In the words of our 1st District Governor Lion J N Bawri, “… therefore after due consideration, we separated ourselves with new district 322-D”.Our district started with 46 clubs and with a total membership strength of 2206 members.
District 322-D was once again divided in 2000-01 and the area comprising of Sikkim, revenue of Malda, West Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Coochbehar and Country of Bhutan were separated as district 322-F and the area of seven states remained in district 322-D
First Club of District 322-D
From technical point of view the history of this district can be traces from the lionistic year 1979-80. But it is indispensible part of the lionistic movement in our district that Lions Club of Darjeeling was inaugurated on the 13th May 1958. The club was part of this district till second bifurcation in the year 2000-01 when it became part of district 322-F
First Charter Club in District 322D
The first charter club of our district Lions Club of Digboi( http://digboilcind.lionwap.org), is intimately linked with the legendry Lion Rusi B Gimi,”The Lion of the East” What began as a lonely club in the developing oil district of Digboi in the north-east is today as very active club of almost 49 years of service to mankind. The lead taken nearly four decade ago by Digboi and Darjeeling has today blossomed into a movement spread over nine states.
An accidental meeting of Rusi B Gimi with Jagdish Phookan,, a personal from Oil company at Digboi in 1958 paved the way to bring Lions movement to Digboi. Under the dynamic initiative of Late K B Kanuga – a top oil company executive – Lions Club of Digboi came into existence in September, 1958 and receive it’s charter on 19th September 1958. Both Rusi with his wife Zarina and lion Noshir N Phundole, the charter president of Lions Club Bombay (1st club of India) came to present the 30 members club it’s charter. The guest of honour of the ceremony was Sri F A Ahmed, the them finance minister of Assam( later President of India) and thus Digboi became the first club of the north-east(then in L. Dist-304) and the oldest club of present District 322-D
